What is Brain Upgrade?

Brain Upgrade is a web-based productivity tool designed to enhance focus and manage time effectively. It combines a customizable Pomodoro Timer with a Binaural Beats generator and a variety of ambient Noise options. This unique blend helps users concentrate on tasks like studying, writing, or coding by minimizing distractions and promoting a state of flow. The application works seamlessly on both desktop and mobile browsers, allowing you to save your preferred settings as presets for quick access.

What is Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for 'tomato', after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a university student. The technique aims to provide the user with maximum focus and creative freshness, thereby allowing them to complete projects faster with less mental fatigue. Brain Upgrade implements this technique with customizable work and break durations.

What is Binaural Beats?

Binaural beats are an auditory illusion perceived when two different pure-tone sine waves, both with frequencies lower than 1500 Hz and with less than a 40 Hz difference between them, are presented to a listener dichotically (one through each ear). For example, if a 300 Hz pure tone is presented to the right ear and a 310 Hz pure tone is presented to the left ear, the listener will perceive the auditory illusion of a third tone, in addition to the two pure-tones presented to each ear. The third sound is called a binaural beat, and in this example would have a perceived pitch correlating to a frequency of 10 Hz, that being the difference between the 310 Hz and 300 Hz pure tones presented to each ear. Binaural beats are claimed by some to induce various states of mind, such as relaxation, focus, or sleep, depending on the frequency of the beat. Brain Upgrade allows you to generate these beats by setting a base frequency and a gap frequency.

How to use Brain Upgrade

Using Binaural Beats

  • Navigate to the "Binaural Beats" tab.
  • Toggle the "Enable Binaural Beats" switch to turn them on or off.
  • Adjust the "Base Frequency" slider for the primary tone.
  • Adjust the "Gap" slider to set the difference between the left and right ear frequencies. This difference creates the binaural beat (e.g., Base 100Hz + Gap 10Hz = 10Hz beat).
  • Check "Swap L/R Frequencies" to interchange the frequencies sent to each ear.
  • Control the "Binaural Volume" with its dedicated slider.
  • Press the main "Play" button (the large one above the tabs) to start the sound.
  • To save your settings, click "Add to Presets".

Using the Noise Generator

  • Go to the "Noise" tab.
  • Toggle the "Enable Noise" switch.
  • Select your desired noise type (White, Pink, Brown, Blue, Violet) from the options.
  • Adjust the "Noise Volume" using its slider.
  • Press the main "Play" button to start the noise.
  • To save your settings, click "Add to Presets".

Combining Binaural Beats and Noise

  • Ensure both "Binaural Beats" and "Noise" are enabled and configured in their respective tabs.
  • In the main sound controls area (above the tabs), select "Binaural + Noise" from the play mode options.
  • Press the main "Play" button. Both sounds will play simultaneously.
  • You can adjust individual volumes and settings in their tabs even while playing.
  • To save this combined setup, click "Add to Presets".

Using the Pomodoro Timer

  • Select your session type: "Pomodoro (25m)", "Short Break (5m)", or "Long Break (15m)" from the Pomodoro Timer tabs.
  • The timer display will update with the selected duration.
  • Click "Start" to begin the countdown.
  • Use "Pause" to temporarily stop, and "Reset" to go back to the default time for the current session.
  • Linking with Sound:
    • Use the "Link with Sound" switch below the timer controls.
    • If **ON**: Pomodoro "Start" also plays the main sound; Pomodoro "Pause" also stops the main sound.
    • If **OFF**: The timer operates independently of the main sound.
  • A notification will appear when the timer session ends.
